Cass has spent much more time in the last few years in the company of ghosts than she has in the company of living beings. After a horrible encounter with her supposed best friend that left her ostracized by the entire school and then the untimely death of her older sister, Cass has had a lot to deal with. When her sister shows up as a ghost, Cass is the only one who sees her and now Cass still has her big sister around for help and advice, even if she isn’t technically alive. Cass has also made good friends with a few ghosts that hang around her high school. For Cass, ghosts are the ideal friends because they can’t hurt her the way people have, and that makes them extremely appealing. Cass’ world is about to change again when Tim, student council VP and card carrying member of the popular crowd, asks for her help. Tim lost his mother just months before and wants Cass to help him contact his mom’s ghost. Cass is skeptical and reluctant to trust a living person, but when she realizes that Tim needs her for much more than just talking to his mom, how can she refuse?

Reaction: This one surprised me, in a good way. I really thought it was just going to be a cutesy ghost story with a fluffy romance and some “issues” thrown in but not developed, and I was ok with that because I do enjoy that kind of book, but Give Up the Ghost was much more than that. Cass has some serious issues with trust. Not only did her friends completely betray her but ever since her sister died, her mother has thrown herself into her career as a travel writer and is barely if ever home and when she is home she seems to criticize Cass to no end. I didn’t always like Cass necessarily, though I understood where she was coming from. I didn’t agree with the choices she was making when it came to learning other students’ secrets and then using the secrets against them. I know in her head she was doing a service, trying to stop the high school evils from happening, but her actions often didn’t make her any better than those she was trying to school.

Then there is Tim, who is a complete wreck. Just when I thought Cass was the one who really needed help, along comes Tim. Tim, who seemingly has it all, at least to Cass, is hurting and no one has noticed. The death of his mother and the betrayal of his father when Tim needed him the most has left Tim a shell of his former self. His friends don’t know how to talk to him so they don’t and he has practically no support system except for an aunt who lives in another town. Tim is left to wallow in his grief with no clear way out. I was proud of Cass for trying with Tim. She didn’t make it easy on him and she certainly didn’t make all the write choices but she could have continued to shut him out but she was able to see beyond her own problems and issues to help Tim in the best way she knew how.

Give Up the Ghost is a great book for people who are dealing with grief, for people who have dealt with bullying, and for anyone who’s felt like they are on the outside. Both Cass and Tim show that no matter how bad things get they aren’t always going to be that way. I think Cass especially really matured and grew to learn that shutting people out is no way live.

A year ago, Reggie’s mother walked out on her family. Since then, Reggie’s father has buried himself in work and Reggie has taken on the role off cook, cleaner, and mother to her younger brother Henry. Reggie’s one escape from her new life is her job at a local bookstore that specializes in horror novels. Reggie loves horror stories. When unpacking a shipment at work, Reggie comes across a journal of a crazy woman. The woman tells a tale a frightening tale of entities called Vours. Vours are attracted by light but feed on fears. They can enter a body using a person’s fears and take over that body. They retain the person’s memories and can live as the person they take over but they are not the same. Reggie thinks she has found a wonderful story but it turns out to be more real than she could ever imagine. When Reggie’s brother is taken over by a Vour, she is determined to find out how to conquer the Vour and save her brother.

Reaction: What a pleasantly creepy surprise! A true teen horror a la R. L. Stine or Christopher Pike. I loved the pacing. The story flowed well and I thought Reggie’s realization that Vours are real was realistic and accurate. The creepy parts were REALLY creepy, at least for me, specifically the scenes where Reggie and gang enters the old house in the woods and then when she goes back, BY HER SELF! It obviously made an impression on me. If I have a complaint it is that sometimes the voice shifted to Henry or to Reggie’s friend Aaron and I found it a bit awkward. Overall, a really awesome horror story. This is the book that broke my several month reading slump.

My Reviewers of Young Adult Literature (ROYAL) group met tonight to share the books we read and reviewed in the past two months. Being awesome, as usually, I did not yet read two of my assigned titles, Ash by Melinda Lo and Ghost Huntress: The Awakening by Marley Gibson. I’ll add those to the next meeting’s roundup. Here are the titles I did get to:

The Demon’s Lexicon by Sarah Rees Brennan

Nick and his brother, Alan, have been on the run from magicians and the demons magicians use for power for as long as they can remember. Magicians killed their father and drove their mother mad, and now the magicians are after their mother’s special charm, the only thing keeping her alive. Having dealt with magicians and demons for so long, the brothers are known as something of experts on the subject, and brother and sister, Jamie and Mae, seek the brothers out for help when Jamie is triple-marked by a demon. In the process of helping Jamie, Alan is also marked by a demon. Now two magicians must be killed to remove the demon marks from Alan and Jamie, and the hunted become the hunters. On top of everything, Nick suspects that his brother is keeping secrets and lying, and he’s determined to find out what Alan is hiding. Nick, Alan, Mae, and Jamie are about to embark on the battle of their lives.

A standout in the saturated fantasy genre. The characters are well drawn and three dimensional, especially Nick, who is very different from the others and lacks the ability to experience typical human emotions. The story will appeal to a wide audience. Boys will appreciate the sword fights and fast-paced action and girls will enjoy the depth of the relationships between the two sets of siblings and the new relationships that are forming. The cover may make the book hard to sell. I’ve had it on display at my library and it just sits there. A simpler, more gender-neutral cover may serve to market it a bit better.

How to Say Goodbye in Robot by Natalie Standiford

For her senior year, Bea is moving to yet another new school, following as her professor father changes colleges once again. Bea is used to moving a lot and not having any close friends but she was also used to having a fun-loving mother who was more friend than parent, and this is no longer the case. Bea’s mother has taken a crazy turn. She has become emotional, withdrawn, and obsessed with chickens. When Bea starts her new school, she’s not sure what to expect and is just looking forward to making in through the year and onto the freedom of college. Bea is in for an unexpected surprise when she finds a soul mate of sorts in a lonely boy named Jonah, called Ghost Boy. Jonah hasn’t had a friend in years, since the death of his mentally handicapped twin brother and mother. Somehow he and Bea connect over a late night radio talk show, shared beliefs, and good conversation but their relationship is far from easy.

A very well written story about true friendship. I believe almost everyone hopes to click with someone in the way that Bea and Jonah connect but their relationship is also volatile. Jonah has lived so long alone with his pain and, while Bea seems to help bring him back to life, when Jonah has periods of withdrawal from Bea, it is heartbreaking. The characterizations are wonderful, not only of Bea and Jonah but also the many secondary characters. I especially enjoyed the regular callers to the Night Lights radio program and was impressed with how well Standiford was able to make Jonah’s father a sympathetic character despite all of the horrible choices he made. A fairly typical paragraph structure is broken up by short snippets from the radio program, which adds interest to the book’s structure. While this is a truly wonderful novel, I don’t think it will have a broad appeal. Special readers will be enthralled but others just may not understand it.

*Bea and Jonah’s relationship reminded me of Jennifer and Cameron from Sweethearts by Sara Zarr but with more going on much more substance to the story outside of the relationship.

Chasing Boys by Karen Tayleur

El’s dad is gone and now her family has downsized. Her big house, mostly stay-at-home mom, and fancy private school are gone. Now they live in an apartment where El shares a room with her sister, her mother works long hours, and El is enrolled in public school. The fact that this life is temporary, only until all the legalities are worked out, helps El get through the day. El has made two good friends at her new school, Margot and Desi, but she mostly tries to stay detached, until her crush, a new boy, and a new friend cause her to once again alter the view of her reality.

The title and cover seem to suggest that this is a light, fluffy book about girl/boy relationships but it is so much more. El is struggling with the loss of her father and, to some extent, the loss of her identity as her life is turned completely upside down. El’s thoughts and reactions seem spot on for a teenage girl. Some of my favorite passages are when El is talking in her mind to her therapist, Leonard, to whom she refuses to talk to during their sessions. Short chapters make this an accessible read for reluctant readers. Readers who are expecting a romance with a neat, wrapped up ending may be disappointed but those who can get past expectations will be in for a treat. Great read for fans of Dessen and Caletti.

Other books, reviewed by others, that piqued my interest:

After a devastating leg injury ends her promising career as a principle ballerina and some poor choices at her mother’s wedding get her in hot water, Sylvie Davis’ life is in an upheaval. While her mother and her mother’s new husband are away on an extended honeymoon, Sylvie is shipped off to spend part of her summer with her deceased father’s cousin, a woman she’s only met once–at her father’s funeral. Her father’s cousin, Paula, is working on refurbishing Sylvie’s father’s family’s ancestral home in Alabama, and that is where Sylvie is going to stay. Sylvie is hoping for a relaxing time full of reading, healing, and figuring out what she wants to do with her life now that her dream, her career, her passion has been taken away. Instead, Sylvie gets a watchful cousin, warned by Sylvie’s psychologist stepfather that Sylvie is headed for danger, a house and town rich with a family history she never knew about and expectations linked to that history that she’s not sure she wants to live up to, a broody boy and a charming boy both vying for her attention, and visions of a watching colonel, a running woman, and a crying baby. What is going on in this small Alabama community? Is Sylvie going crazy or is what she’s seeing and feel for real? And if it’s real, what does it mean?

Reaction: Overall, another solid story from RCM. There were a lot of really well-done elements. I found Sylvie a very believable character. Her struggle with her identity after her injury and her sanity as she started seeing things felt real. I could understand her anger and her frustration over her situation even as those around her seemed to think she should be able to move on by now. I also enjoyed how little Sylvie reminded me of Maggie Quinn, the protagonist of RCM’s other novels. I think it is a sign of a good writer when her characters are distinctly different. I also greatly enjoyed the setting. It was well-drawn, atmospheric, and really added to the overall effect of the story. Finally, one little thing but something that stood out to me, I appreciated Sylvie’s lackluster relationship with her cousin Paula. I feel so often in other stories, teens find these immediate and amazing relationships with a previously unknown adult when they are thrust in new situations and I really appreciated the fact that Sylvie and Paula didn’t see eye to eye; it just felt more realistic to me. There were a few things I didn’t like: 1. there were some inconsistencies (Sylvie being freaked by the lilac sent in her room one minute then thinking not long after that the scent was the only unexplained event that didn’t creep her out); 2. the length, it could have been shorter; and 3. the lack of time Rhys and Sylvie had to develop their feelings. The complaints are minor in the end and do not keep me from recommending this title to those who like a bit of history and mystery with their ghosty, supernatural stories.

Also by RCM:

Cute, light, easy-on-the-brain supernatural books. Daisy is a “norm” in a family of psychics. Her father was also a norm but he disappeared and no one is sure if he’s dead of alive. Daisy believes he abandoned them but the rest of her family still holds out hope that he’s going to return. Daisy has a best friend named Ryan on whom she has an unrequited crush and an ex-best friend named Samantha who is a cheerleader and one of the most popular girls in school.

In Dead is the New Black, girls (including several members of the cheerleading squad) are collapsing with unexplained illness, some are even dying. Daisy decides she wants to solve the mystery, with or without any kind of psychic ability, and she’s so desperate to find out the truth she’s even willing to become a cheerleader.

Dead is a State of Mind picks up several months after the end of the first book. Nightshade High has a new student, handsome Duke Sherrad, and he has his eyes on Daisy. Daisy’s not interested but her avoidance of Duke is hampered by the fact that Ryan is avoiding her and hanging out with an unknown, gorgeous woman. On top of that, Daisy’s sister Poppy is dating a ghost and a teacher at her school is found dead with what look like animal claw marks on his skin.

If you’re looking for a quick, fun read, then check these out. There are definitely plot holes, some things that are overlooked, some things that fall into place a bit too easily, but as long as you go in without super high expectations, you’ll definitely enjoy the ride.

Still to read in the series: Dead is So Last Year

Last week I was looking for good recommendations for girly fantasy titles not involving vampires or fairies. No one had any but that’s ok because not long after posting that I received My Soul to Take by Rachel Vincent and Meridian by Amber Kizer in on hold at the library. You can guess what I’ve been doing the past couple of days! :) I didn’t realize how similar these two books were when I originally requested them but reading them back to back made me think that they would be perfect paired together for review. Both books deal with death and the release of a person’s soul after death.

I picked up My Soul to Take first, which was a bit surprising because I really had no interest in the title when I first heard about it…a girl who uncontrollably screams when someone dies, nuh uh, but the whims of a reader never make sense (at least my reading whims).

Kaylee Cavanaugh has lived with her aunt, uncle, and cousin for most of her life, ever since her mother died in a car accident and her father, deciding he couldn’t care for young Kaylee on his own, dropped her off and headed to Ireland. Despite her father’s abandonment, Kaylee’s life is mostly normal, except for her attacks. Her aunt and uncle, doctors, everyone seems to think these episodes are run-of-the-mill panic attacks, and Kaylee just needs some drugs and she’ll be fine. Kaylee knows that’s not the case, she knows screaming endlessly for hours for no apparent reason isn’t normal but it’s not a panic attack and she’s not crazy and she doesn’t need drugs. After a night out at a dance club, things simultaneously get better and worse for Kaylee. The good: Nash, one of the hottest guys at school, seems to be interested in her and doesn’t even freak out when she has an “episode,” in fact, his presence and the songs he sings to her help calm her down from the worst of the attack. The bad: Nash knows a secret about Kaylee, one that can explain everything she’s going through, a secret that her family has kept from her her entire life. Also, Kaylee learns she screams when someone dies, and lately, Kaylee has been screaming a lot.

Next, Meridian (pretty cover, right?) Death has followed Meridian her whole life, attracted to her like a magnet from the time she was a baby. At first it was just insects but as Meridian grew, so did the size of the creatures that sought her. Meridian has also almost always been sick. She has trouble sleeping (I suppose anyone would if they woke up with dead things going bump in the night around them), she doesn’t eat much, her whole body aches and constantly seems as though it is physically falling apart. She’s never really had friends and has always been considered weird. Even her parents seem standoffish and are not as affectionate with her as they are with her younger brother, Sammy. Young Sammy is the only one who seems to love and accept Meridian for herself. On her sixteenth birthday, everything changes. Walking home from the bus stop, Meridian witnesses a car plowing into and killing several of her classmates. All of the death causes Meridian to completely collapse. Her parents quickly ship her off to a bus station, give her a ticket and some money, and tell her to make her way to her aunt’s house in Revelation, Colorado. They tell her they love her but she’s not to come back home because they won’t be there; they’re leaving as well and they don’t tell her where they’re going. Meridian has no idea what’s going on and knows nothing about this aunt except that she sends quilts as birthday presents.

After a long, tiring journey, Meridian finally makes it to Auntie’s and Auntie reveals the big secret, one that Meridian should have been told a long time ago: Meridian is a Fenestra. A Fenestra is half-human, half-angel and she provides souls a safe passage to the good afterlife (many would call it heaven). Meridian must learn to control her power before it ruins her and in time to save herself and her loved ones from the evil beings that seek to destroy Fenestras and those who work in the light.

Reaction(s): Two very different books, two very similar themes. In My Soul to Take, Kaylee’s screams allow her control souls as they depart from the dead, giving them time to say final goodbyes and guaranteeing they won’t be snatched by malevolent beings. In Meridian, Meridian is a Fenestra who helps ferry souls between the living world and the afterlife. To my surprise, I enjoyed My Soul to Take better, though they were both good. My Soul to Take ended up having fairies of sorts but it was such a different and original take on fairies that I didn’t mind that it violated one of my specifications. :) I thought the back story was fairly well developed and I really enjoyed Kaylee and Nash as a couple. While they had an instant bond, the “L” word was never mentioned. I get really annoyed when characters fall instantly in love, though I know I’m in the minority. Kaylee and Nash had instant attraction, which I think is totally believable, and a pull because they were two of a kind and different from pretty much everyone else they knew. I’m interested in reading some of the next books in the series but not dying to do so.

Merdian wasn’t quite as tightly drawn as My Soul to Take. The premise was very interesting and the characters had potential it just seemed like there was a bit too much going on to fully develop any one thing. I wanted more practice time between Meridian and Auntie. I wanted Tens and Meridian to have more time to develop their feelings. In the end it turned into a jarring instant love with little transition between Tens’ veiled animosity and his love. I wanted more time to understand the bad guy and a better battle with evil at the end. Again, a great premise and a good story, I just needed a bit more from it.

Both stories dip into areas that are new to me in the fantasy genre and provide interesting takes on death, souls, and the afterlife.

P.S. I’m still interested in any fantasy with romantic subplot recommendations if you have any. :)

Madison Avery is dead but no one knows it. On the night of her prom she was killed by a celestial being, a dark reaper, but somehow managed to snag his amulet and give her ghost self a corporeal form. Now she is being guarded and taught by a light reaper named Barnabas. Avery is a bit of an anomaly, even in the strange new world of which she is now apart, and Avery and those who are trying to save her must figure out what she is and her role in her new ghosty life before the dark forces find her once again and try to get rid of her once and for all.

Reaction: Wow, it was hard to write an understandable plot synopsis for this one. Avery’s world is complicated. There are light reapers and dark reapers. Dark reapers decide to take the lives of people before their natural death time in order to stop something it is predicted the person will do in the future that the dark reapers don’t want to see happen. Light reapers try to stop the dark reapers from prematurely ending a life. Light reapers and dark repears are angels of sorts and are sent on their various missions by two timekeepers, one dark and one light, who used to be human and are not immortal. A dark reaper was sent to and did kill Avery but somehow after she was dead she got a hold of the amulet of the dark reaper who slayed her and this gave her special ghosty powers, like a body even though it isn’t actually her body because the dark reaper stole her real body. The story is about what Avery is supposed to do now, who is after her and why, and what her future as a dead girl holds.

These are the basics of this complicated story but it felt like basics are all we really get. The story is more of an outline or unfinished, undeveloped full story. Details are not explained or not explained very well. I wanted to know more about Avery’s hinted to past — the whole story behind why she now lives with her dad. I wanted more background on the light and dark reapers — what they were exactly, where they really came from, how they were assigned — and the timekeepers — how are they chosen, what are all of their jobs, powers, and functions. And then there was Avery and Josh. They had an odd history. I wanted to know why Josh agreed to ask Avery to prom, I wanted to know why Avery said yes in the first place since they seem so different, and I wanted to know who Josh’s real friends were since he was so nice and his friends were such jerks.

Overall, I’m interested to see where this series* goes because it’s a unique and interesting premise but I just hope that there is a lot more development and explanation in the next book otherwise I don’t see this series going very far.

The cover, though. The cover’s awesome.

*I’m assuming this is a series. Her other books are a series and this one is very open ended. I couldn’t find any information on other books but I didn’t dig too hard. I guess we’ll see.

by Kelley Armstrong

The Awakening is the second book in a trilogy. If you haven’t read the first, The Summoning, then you definitely should. Oh, and I wouldn’t read this review. Spoilers galore for those who haven’t read the first.

After mistakenly trusting her Aunt Lauren, Chloe and Rae are taken to the Edison Group’s compound and locked away “for their own safety.” Chloe is determined to breakout before the Edison Group and their leader, Dr. Davidoff, can do anything to her or Rae, but she is also determined to gather information while she is on the inside. After a bit of sneaking around and with the help of a ghostly demi-demon, Chloe is able to find out the truth behind the importance of the teens sent to the Lyle House. The truth is shocking, it leaves Chloe with a huge uncertainty about her and her friends’ futures, and confirms her worst fears, the Edison Group is not above killing teenagers, just like they did Liz and Brady before her. More determined than ever, Chloe is desperate to escape and meet up with Simon and Derek. But even if she gets out, where will she and the boys go? Who will help? How can they stop the Edison group?

Reaction: I have no idea how this is going to be wrapped up in only one more book (which, according to Kelley’s site, will be called The Reckoning). It took me awhile to get my bearings since I read the first book a year ago. Armstrong just throws you right back into the mix, pretty much as if the first book never ended. Despite the fact that it took me a few chapters to re-orient myself, I really like this method. No chapters of rehashing, just the story, and you’re back in the action. Like with the first book, I don’t want to say too much because I don’t want to give anything away. I will say, there is a lot more Chloe and Derek time, which I loved. They have a lot in common when it comes to their powers — both of them are developing more quickly than they should with pretty much no guidance as to how to control the powers. I think this commonality will become important in the next book. Plus, I just like Chloe and Derek together as a team. I think they mesh very well. I do see a problem in the future with a possible Derek-Chloe-Simon thing becoming an issue. I guess we’ll see! Overall, The Awakening was action-packed. It is a fight for survival, not only against the Edison Group and the supernatural world but against the real world as well. The group is constantly moving and constantly facing one kind of adversary or another. I have no doubt that The Awakening will keep you turning the pages to see what is going to happen next because that is exactly what happened to me!

Other reviews: Check out what Kristi over at The Story Siren has to say about it. I think she wrote a great review and she touched on things I didn’t think of.

For anyone who has read it already (and if not, SPOILERS AHEAD!):

What do you think of Andrew? I don’t trust him. Did you catch that “It’s so great to see you [Tori] and Simon together” thing he said? What about Chloe and Derek? I think he’s going to pose a threat to them. I bet Simon and Derek’s dad didn’t join Andrew because Andrew wants to get rid of Derek, not because it was “too political” for him. I feel bad because I want the group to have somewhere safe to hideout and have some adults on their side but I don’t believe that Andrew and his group is all he’s divulging them to be. It’s driving me crazy. I want to know now what’s going to happen. I want to know what you think is going to happen! Leave me a comment with what you think, just remember to mark it as a spoiler.

by Charlaine Harris

If you’ve never read a Sookie Stackhouse/Southern Vampire book, I warn you not to read any further but to pick up the first book in the series, Dead Until Dark, and begin there.

Sookie’s in for another wild ride. The Weres are going public, her soon-to-be-ex-sister-in-law is found crucified behind Sookie’s place of work, and there is a war brewing in the fairy world that has spilled over into the human world. Of course Sookie also has the confusing task of sorting through her feelings for the men in her life. At the moment, she’s trying to decide whether what she’s feeling for Eric is real or because of their blood bond. Sookie certainly has a full plate.

Reaction: I once again finished with the need to find out what’s next, and I honestly have no clues. As in From Dead to Worse, there is a sense of closure for some of the story-lines. One of the main things that remains open is with whom Sookie will chose to actually have a steady relationship. I am cheering for Team Eric but I am still skeptical as to how this would logistically work. Quinn made an appearance. Bill is ever-present and possibly still in the running if the ending is of any indication, though Sookie would be dumb not to give Eric a chance to explain — you will have to read to see what I mean. And Sam’s name always gets thrown into the mix. The end also finds Sookie recovering from, in my opinion, the worst thing that has ever happened to her, and we all know she’s already been through a lot. I will be interested to see how the experience changes her, if at all. Like I said, I have absolutely no idea what is next in store for Sookie but I can’t wait to find out!

Maggie Quinn and her psychic ability are on the road. Maggie and her bff Lisa are off to South Padre Island to get material for her World’s Least Likely Spring Breaker article. Unfortunately, like many things Maggie does, her trip doesn’t exactly go as planned. Before they make it to South Padre, Maggie runs over a dead cow and ruins the undercarriage of her jeep. Maggie and Lisa are stranded in the tiny town of Dulcina, TX and it turns out Dulcina has a bit of a problem. The cow Maggie ran over, not your normal dead cow. In fact, the cow had been ripped apart in a very unnatural way, and it’s not the only thing to be killed that way. So far, 3 goats, a puppy, and a herding dog have also bit the dust by having their throats mauled. As much as Lisa insists she wants to be normal for one week, after Maggie’s psychic mojo meter continues to go off it cannot be denied that something bad is going on, but what exactly? Is it Evil with a capital E?

Reaction: Another fun, funny addition to the Maggie Quinn collection. I was glad to see Maggie and Lisa mending the rift between them and coming together again to do some demon-fighting. I was sad that Maggie didn’t spend more time with her boyfriend Justin but I thought their interactions and reactions to each other and the different situations were spot-on for beginning of the relationship insecurities and the blossoming strong feelings. Maggie’s sarcasm was really dialed down in this one. Lisa was the snarkiest in this one, though Maggie did get in a few zingers. I read in an Amazon review that the reviewer felt that Maggie was evolving and growing up, and I hadn’t thought of that before I read it but I think it’s an accurate observation. Maggie is maturing. Overall, this was probably my least favorite of the three books but I still really, really enjoyed it and will certainly continue following Maggie Quinn in her future ventures as Girl vs. Evil.

What’s next: No news on Rosemary Clement-Moore’s website about another Maggie Quinn but there is an interesting blurb for a new book called Splendor Falls. I’ll be looking out for this one.
